You should make a claim for TPD insurance as soon as you are advised by your doctor that you are not able to return to work.
When should a Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) Claim be made? The straight answer is: As soon as you find out that you are not able to return to work.
If you are not able to work and you have TPD insurance either via your super fund or through a private policy, you should make a claim for that insurance as soon as you are advised by your doctor that you are not able to return to work. The insurance is there for the very purpose of compensating you for your inability to work. Why not claim it if you can't work?!
If you have made a claim for a work injury, car accident, medical negligence or any other personal injury claim, you can also make a claim for a lump sum TPD payment via your TPD insurance held with your super fund or private insurer with no requirement to pay money back to the other insurer.
If you are receiving Centrelink payments, you can claim a TPD lump sum payment in addition to your Centrelink payments. You don’t have to be approved for a disability support pension, but if you have been, that is a good indication you will meet the requirements to make a TPD claim. A lump sum TPD payment is to assist you when you are unable to work and will provide some security to you and your loved ones.
While every insurance policy will have a different definition of what will be considered total and permanent disability, there are no particular injuries or illnesses required to make a claim. If you can demonstrate with medical evidence that you meet the definition set by your super fund/insurer for total and permanently disability, then you can make a claim. We will assist you in getting the evidence required to secure your TPD payment.
